Design systems that scale with your team

Bluewaves Design5 min read

A design system is only as good as the day-to-day decisions it removes. We share how we structure tokens, components, and docs so design and engineering move as one.

The point of a design system isn't consistency for its own sake — it's speed. Every decision the system makes for you is a decision a designer or engineer doesn't have to relitigate on the next screen.

Start with tokens

Color, spacing, typography, and radius live as named tokens, not magic numbers. Change a token once and the whole product moves with it. This is where a system earns its keep.

Components encode decisions

  • A button component isn't just a style — it's an accessibility contract.
  • Variants should express intent (primary, subtle, destructive), not appearance.
  • If a component needs a comment to explain when to use it, the docs belong next to the code.
Good design systems make the right thing the easy thing — and the wrong thing hard to build by accident.
